Physical Activity Self-Referral

Our Movement Matters Programme has been set up to support people to get active and connect with others. CHSS will provide a range of intensity options from chair to circuits based activity.

We are delighted to offer virtual sessions and face to face physical activity sessions in our venue at the Maryhill Hub. Get Started

Our sessions are only ever delivered by suitably qualified health and exercise professionals. On completing the referral form one of our team will review the information and then be in touch within 14 days. Please note list of exclusion criteria below.

The sessions will typically last between 30 and 60 minutes and will be at a level suitable for the participant.

The instructors will offer progressions and will also provide the participants with handy hints and tips throughout of how you can keep moving at home throughout the week.

Virtual Sessions

To take part in the session, you will need comfortable clothing, a drink of water and access to any essential medications (e.g. GTN Spray or Inhaler) and access to a laptop/ tablet/ PC with a camera and microphone. For details of the sessions please contact virtual@chss.org.uk

Maryhill Hub Sessions

If you are taking part in the new face to face sessions then please come to the sessions wearing comfortable clothing, a drink of water and access to any essential medications (e.g. GTN Spray or Inhaler).

Please note referral form must be completed in advance.

Timetable:

Tuesday 1-2pm Face to Face Strength and Balance Session This (45-60 minute) session is suitable for anyone who is mobile (with or without a mobility aid) but who may have difficulty with balance and carrying out daily activities. Also suitable for anyone who experiences breathing difficulties and anyone identified as at risk of a fall/previous fall/fear of falling, as well as anyone with Osteoporosis. All exercises can be done seated or standing, using a chair for support.
Tuesday 2.15- 3.15pm Face to Face Easy Circuits This (60 minute) standing session is suitable for anyone with independent mobility (with or without a mobility aid) who would like to improve their functional fitness, strength and balance or who may have some difficulty doing daily activities. Also suitable for cardiac patients wanting to improve endurance and strength.
Wednesday 1-1.45pm Virtual Respiratory Peer Group Session This (30-45 minute) seated physical activity session is suitable for anyone who experiences breathing difficulties. The focus is on improving functional strength and helping you learn how to manage your breathlessness, as well as improve your quality of life.
Wednesday 2-3pm Virtual Functional Strength and Balance Session This (45-60 minute) session is suitable for anyone who is mobile (with or without a mobility aid) but who may have difficulty with balance and carrying out daily activities.  Also suitable for anyone who experiences breathing difficulties.  All exercises can be done seated or standing, using a chair for support.
Thursday 11:30-12:15pm Virtual Long Covid Physical Activity Session This (30-45 minute) seated physical activity session is suitable for anyone who has long covid or any other long term chest condition. The focus is on pacing, improving functional strength and learning how to manage breathlessness, as well as improve your quality of life.  All exercises are done from the chair and you are invited to stop, rest and restart any time you feel you need to.  We finish the session with a few minutes of Adapted Tai Chi/Relaxation.
Thursday 10:30-11:30am Virtual Functional Fitness Session This (60 minute) standing session is suitable for anyone with independent mobility (with or without a mobility aid) who would like to improve their functional fitness, strength and balance or who may have some difficulty doing daily activities.  Also suitable for cardiac patients wanting to improve endurance and strength.

  • Unstable angina
  • Recent MI (within 8 weeks of session start date)
  • Acute heart failure or chronic heart failure (NYHA 3 or 4)
  • Symptomatic aortic valve disease
  • Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy
  • Uncontrolled tachycardia or uncontrolled arrhythmia or a ventricular rate > 100bpm
  • MRC Dyspnoea Scale 4
  • Uncontrolled hypertension
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Symptomatic Hypotension
  • Ortho impairment that would limit ability to take part in exercise.
  • Neurological or cognitive impairment that would limit ability to take part in physical activity.
  • Ongoing symptoms associated with Covid-19

*There may be instances where it is appropriate to take part in low intensity physical activity should the individual have had sufficient investigations and been cleared by the HCP to take part.
