The Effect of Acute UV-A Exposure and Dietary Nitrate Ingestion on Plasma Nitrate, Endothelial Function and Blood Pressure

Type: Heart Stroke

Grant holder: Dr Chris Easton, University of the West of Scotland

Amount Awarded: £5,000

Year: 2013 - finished

This pilot project will explore whether two methods of increasing levels of nitric oxide in the body will enhance key markers of cardiovascular health. Specifically, we will investigate the acute effects of short-term exposure to simulated sunlight and ingestion of a dietary nitrate supplement on blood vessel function, blood pressure and cardiac responses during rest and exercise. This research will provide “proof of concept” on the therapeutic potential of sunlight and dietary nitrate in the treatment of hypertension and other cardiovascular disorders. The data will provide the evidence base on which to build future grant applications for larger clinical trials.
