The Association Between Blood Pressure and the Different Pathological Types of Stroke in UK Biobank

Type: Heart Stroke

Grant holder: Dr. Rebecca Woodfield, Western General Hospital

Amount Awarded: £85,014 over 18 months

Year: 2014 - Finished

My project will use data from the UK Biobank, a detailed study of 500,000 volunteers, to improve our understanding of the relationships between different measures of blood pressure (BP) and the different types of stroke. Stroke is the third commonest cause of death in Scotland and a significant cause of disability. Raised BP is one of the most important treatable causes of stroke. My research will use new methods to see if BP abnormalities cause some types of stroke more than others. This will improve our understanding of stroke causes and guide the development of more personalised treatments for stroke prevention.
