Volunteers Needed to Boost Support for People Living with Long Term Health Conditions in Grampian

Leading health charity, Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland (CHSS) are seeking local volunteers to support people living with chest, heart, stroke conditions and Long Covid through their Community Support Services model.

Grampian based Vicki Wood, Community Support Services Manager (North) first got involved through volunteering.

Reflecting on how this volunteering gave her an insight into the opportunities available to help others, Vicki shared: “When I first joined CHSS it was purely as a volunteer. I didn’t know where the journey would take me – I just wanted to give my time, support people in the community, and hopefully make a small difference.

“Those first months taught me so much. I learned to listen, to connect, and to understand the real challenges people living with our conditions face every day. I also discovered how much I enjoyed being part of a team that was dedicated to helping others.

“About 6 months later I applied to step into a paid Coordinator role. It was a big shift, I was now supporting other volunteers, organising schedules and making sure our services in the community were running smoothly. This gave me a fantastic opportunity to grow and learn more about a sector I had never worked in before.”

“Fast forward to today, and I now have the privilege of leading a team of coordinators delivering community support. This role has been the most rewarding step yet. I get to support and motivate an amazing group of people, help new volunteers find their feet, and work on making sure our services reach as many people as possible.”

“This journey has taught me one powerful lesson: Never underestimate where volunteering can take you. What begins as a small step can grow into a path of leadership, purpose and transformation – both for yourself and for the community around you.”

Locals in Grampian are sought to become 1-2-1 Community Support Volunteers. Giving an hour or so of your time a week allows CHSS to provide one-to-one support that is personalised, compassionate, and empowering.  Volunteers will volunteer closely with individuals, promoting self-management and helping service users build the skills and confidence needed to achieve their own goals. Thanks to volunteers’ invaluable support, CHSS can extend their reach and ensure more people living with long term health conditions get the help they need to live their lives to the fullest.
