The Future of Health in Scotland – an Open Letter

Commenting on the open letter issued by Enlighten – Scotland’s independent think tank – calling for a reimagining of the health service, Jane-Claire Judson Chief Executive of Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland said:

“Given the mounting pressures on the health of our nation, and our health and social care system it is clear that there is a need for long term change. Too many people are left navigating overcomplicated and inefficient systems, with the health of our country suffering as a result.

“We need a shared approach from leadership across health and social care and the third sector to challenge norms and work to reimagine healthcare as a shared endeavour, with stronger focus on prevention and early intervention.

“This includes finding a space where hard conversations can be had – where we won’t always agree and can respect that. It requires us to not just cite examples of good approaches to health, but to decide which ones to adopt and fiercely implement.

“There is potential for cross-party and cross-sectoral acceptance and agreement on the areas that are working, and those that require reform. Taking this discussion wider will allow us to find effective, fair and sustainable long-term solutions to Scotland’s healthcare crisis.”
