How we’ve been helping people across Scotland through the pandemic
The Covid-19 pandemic has been the biggest challenge our generation has faced. People across Scotland were scared and alone, feeling isolated and trapped in their homes.
At a time when we were losing up to £500,000 a month due to our shops being closed and fundraising events being cancelled, we’ve also seen demand for our services double.
Some of these life-line services were at risk of closure during lockdown. But because of fundraising, donations and volunteering from our amazing supporters, we can continue to be there for the people who need us most right now – and in the future.
During the Covid-19 crisis, our supporters have helped us to…
Provide life-line support for 17,450 people affected by chest, heart and stroke conditions – including Covid-19 – through our Hospital to Home services
Launch a new national service with our NHS heroes – supporting people with severe lung conditions including Covid-19 get home from hospital
Recruit 6,352 volunteers delivering 35,260 acts of kindness in communities across Scotland
Make over 4,011 phone calls to people who are lonely or isolated
Help our kindness volunteers do 1,100 dog walks and 2003 shopping deliveries for vulnerable people
Share life-saving messages and Covid-19 advice 22,327 times online
Restock our charity shops with over 7,500 bags of donations in the first few weeks after our stores reopened.
Raise over £40,518 from our Emergency Appeal to support our vital Advice Line service.
Secure £760,000 of joint funding with the Scottish Government to provide care for people in Scotland with Long Covid.
At the beginning of the pandemic, we launched a call for Kindness Volunteers to join us and support those who were feeling isolated and scared. Even as lockdown restrictions ease, Kindness isn’t going anywhere. Our incredible volunteers are continuing to support people across Scotland to make sure no one is alone.
18 year old Freya and stroke survivor Chris, 70, have become the best of friends since the pair were matched as part of our Kindness Call service. They phone each other every week, and it has made a huge difference to both of their lives.

Ron, 77, lives alone and was feeling isolated after he had a heart attack last April. But now he has something to look forward to as student and Kindness Volunteer Catriona, 22, calls him every week.
When Patricia had a stroke out of the blue on a bus, just weeks before lockdown began, she was terrified. She felt so low until our Kindness Volunteer Sam came into her life and began supporting her with regular Kindness Calls.
Find out how Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland have been supporting three brave survivors during lockdown: bronchiectasis sufferer Agnes, stroke survivor Douglas who contracted Covid-19 in hospital, and John who had an undiagnosed heart attack.Read the Full Story
Lockdown meant that our usual face-to-face services were suddenly put on hold. But our incredible nurses and support workers went above and beyond to make sure people with chest, heart and stroke conditions got the help they needed.
From virtual support groups to one-to-one phone calls, we’ve been there for people across Scotland throughout the pandemic, making sure they haven’t been forgotten about.
We couldn’t have done this without our amazing supporters. Without donations, we wouldn’t be able to fund the jobs of people like Darlene. She has been there throughout the pandemic for people like stroke survivor Tam, who would’ve been completely alone if it weren’t for Darlene’s life-line calls.
Every day in Scotland, people are leaving hospital scared and alone. You can make sure they get the help and support they really need.
Over the last year demand for our services has almost doubled and we can only be there for the people who need us thanks to dedicated fundraisers, supporters and volunteers like you.
