Supporting communication after stroke

If you have a communication difficulty after a stroke, we offer a hospital rehabilitation support service while you are still in hospital and a Community Rehabilitation service to support you at home or in your local community.

In hospital

This service is designed to support the work of the NHS speech and language therapists who provide guidance and support to our staff. This service helps people with a communication difficulty to practice their communication in a social setting with a fully trained communication support partner who will understand their individual needs. This can either be in a one-to-one or small group setting or a combination of both.

Here is what some people who have used our service say about it;

"I was a bit worried to begin with but the helper (communication support worker) was great and we were able to have a bit of a laugh. I didn't expect that"

"It made me feel less lonely on the ward"

"It was good to meet others like me who find it difficult to speak and to know I'm not alone"

"I didn't feel silly if I got things mixed up and wrong."

"Can I get this help when I go home?"

At home / In the community

For people who have a communication difficulty and need help at home to do every day practical and social activities, our community rehabilitation support service can help you to get the support you need. The service will match you with a trained communication support partner who will work with you to achieve your individual goals either in a one to one setting or in a small communication support group setting.

Here is what some people who have used this service say about it;

"It makes me happy to know I have somewhere to meet other people who can't talk the words but know what I'm saying"

"You go at your own speed and nobody bothers if you say the wrong thing"

"No group until now was able to include me so I always felt left out and just sat quietly."
