Aberdeenshire man gets set to cycle 175 miles to pay tribute to late friend
Stuart Johnston, from Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire, is taking on Ride the North, an elite cycling event, to raise vital funds for Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland (CHSS) in memory of his colleague and friend, Barry McGhee.
Over the course of 2 days, 26th – 27th August, Stuart, along with his brother-in-law, John, will be pushing themselves to the limit as they cycle 175 miles through Grampian, Moray and the Highlands.
Last year Stuart was working at DM Halls Chartered Surveyors alongside his colleague, Barry. Barry had his sights set on completing Ride the North following his recovery from planned heart surgery in July 2016. Sadly before he could undergo the surgery he passed away as a result of his heart illness. It was then that Stuart decided to take on this challenge in memory of his colleague and friend.
Stuart explained, “I am taking on Ride the North to raise vital funds for CHSS and to pay tribute to my pal Barry. We really hope that we can raise funds and support for CHSS as they continue to help people who are living with life-changing illnesses.”
“I only began cycling in October last year, so 175 miles over 2 days will be no small task for me. However I will have my brother-in-law alongside me for moral support and encouragement. This ride is for you, Baz!”
Katie Jones, CHSS Fundraising Officer, North East, said, “Ride the North requires a huge amount of training beforehand and so it is so inspiring to see Stuart taking on this challenge as a relatively new cyclist. We want to wish Stuart and John all the best in their fundraising efforts and as they prepare to take on this 2 day event! Team CHSS will be cheering you on!”
“The money raised helps to support people as they get their lives back on track after a stroke or diagnosis or a chest or heart condition. If you’d like to support Stuart in his efforts visit his fundraising page, https://ridethenorth-chss.everydayhero.com/uk/rtn-2017-for-barry-mcghee”
CHSS have been charity partners for this fantastic event for the past 2 years and have a team of 20 riders taking part to raise funds for them. Last year’s CHSS team raised over £13,000. For more information on the event and to take part visit www.ride-the-north.co.uk/
