  • Research suggests 1 in 5 people in Scotland will be affected by chest illness at some point in their life.
  • In 2003 Scottish Health Survey reported 1 in 4 people have a history of wheeze.
  • More than 25% of all acute medical admissions to Scottish hospitals are due to chest illness.
  • COPD is the only major cause of death on the increase in Scotland. (Audit Scotland).

World COPD Day

World COPD event 2010World COPD Day is organized by the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) in collaboration with health care professionals and COPD patient groups throughout the world.

Its aim is to raise awareness about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and improve COPD care throughout the world.

Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland is leading Scotland's efforts in World COPD Day by:

  • Holding awareness events in shopping malls around Scotland.
  • Supporting NHS Scotland staff to hold over 70 local events by supplying them with posters, flyers , health information and merchandise.
  • Holding a COPD day promotion and local COPD quiz in 23 CHSS charity shops.
  • Supporting our affiliated chest group members with COPD with a gift, card and an opportunity to get involved in their area.

COPD Support Service

The COPD Support Service is currently being piloted as a partnership between CHSS and NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. The service provides social support, in the form of Volunteer Befriending, to people living with the debilitating and often isolating effects of COPD.

The COPD Support Service is currently only available in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
