The Voice Scotland team has been working across Scotland gathering peoples’ views. To give you a flavour of 'what people say' who are affected by chest heart and stroke illness you will find below the top categories of issues for each condition and some sample issues collected on our Voices Scotland National Database of Issues.

Chest issues

1. The top respiratory issues are all around Clinical Care, for example

  • General access to respiratory specialist nurses
  • General lack of respect from staff for the patient’s own experience and knowledge of their condition.

Our category of Clinical Care is defined as:

  • Specific experiences or care
  • Level of expertise of health professional
  • Trust in healthcare provider
  • Duration of rehabilitation

2. The second top category of issues are all around Waiting Times, for example

  • When patients have an exacerbation they are unable to access timely appointments.

Our category of Waiting Times is defined as:

  • Timely access to healthcare services
  • Access to see own GP/Consultant
  • Administration of appointments

Current Trending:

  • Inconsistent advance prescribing of antibiotics to assist self management of exacerbations
  • Concerns about future availability of Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Heart issues

The top heart disease issues categories are equally between Information and Support, for example

1. Information:

  • The need for information about my heart disease and treatment to be offered at the right time, in the right format, at the right level.

Our category of Information is defined as:

  • Patient and carer verbal and written information on prevention and condition
  • One to one personal communication given to patients & carers
  • Information given on sources of support

2. Support:

  • Lack of signposting to ongoing support.
  • Lack of information and support for psychological issues

Our category of Support is defined as:

  • When NHS service provision ends for patients and carers
  • Lack of signposting to voluntary sector, local authority, social work etc
  • Support to ‘live’ with the condition

Current Trending:

  • Access to heart failure nurse specialists

Stroke issues

1. The top stroke issues category is Clinical Care for example:

  • Specialist therapies are greatly valued however there are issues around ongoing access to community therapies.
  • Poor ward staff knowledge of aphasia and how to communicate effectively

Our category of Clinical Care is defined as:

  • Specific experiences of clinical care
  • Level of expertise of health professional
  • Trust in healthcare provider
  • Duration of rehabilitation

2. The second top stroke issues category is Information for example:

  • Lack of information in hospital on my condition and treatment.

Our category of Information is defined as

  • Patient & carer verbal and written information on prevention and condition
  • One to one personal communication given to patients & carers
  • Information given on sources of support

Current Trending:

  • Delays in accessing specialist stroke units
  • Lack of stroke patient information in an accessible format.
  • Timing of giving information so as not to overload the stroke patient.
