Abseil FAQ

Abseil FAQs...

1. Where is it?

As the Titan Crane and the Pursers Ticket Office meeting point do not have their own postcode the nearest buildings are the Clydebank College and the Titan Enterprise building at G81 1BF, easily accessible from the M8, M77 & M74 motorways.

2. Do I have to register for a place in advance?

Yes – in order to take part in the Big Abseil in the Dark from the Titan Crane, you must register in advance by clicking HERE. It is not possible to register on the day of the abseil itself.

3. I have friends/family members/colleagues also abseiling. Can we abseil together?

Yes, although you must contact us by calling 0300 1212 999 or by emailing events@chss.org.uk ASAP to let us know you would like to abseil with others at the same or similar time. We will always try our very best to get you abseiling in the same group, but only if requested.

4. How old do you have to be to take part?

In order to take part in the Big Abseil in the Dark from the Titan Crane, you must be at least 16 years old on the day of the event itself. In addition, participants aged 16 or 17 must have written parental consent to take part. If this applies to you, please call us on 0300 1212 999 as soon as possible to get the paperwork sent out to you.

5. How fit do I need to be to take part in the abseil?

There is a glass lift that will take you all the way to the top of the 150ft tall Titan Crane. If for any reason the lift is out of action on the night of the abseil participants must be fit and able to climb stairs to the abseil platform. This is a total of 150ft of ascent. The staircase is enclosed and has good handrails. If you can foresee any issues with this or any other aspects of the abseil, it is important you contact us before you sign up. To get in touch and discuss any queries, please call us on 0300 1212 999 during the hours of 9:15am and 4.00pm.

6. Are there any weight/size limits?

We don’t have any specific weight or size limits for the event. If you do have a concern though, please contact us.

Although we will try our best to accommodate those with special requirements, the health and safety of our participants is our overriding concern and sometimes it is not possible for all participants to abseil. We reserve the right to make this decision at any point on a case by case basis, even if we initially thought it possible for an individual to abseil.

If you have a query, please call us on 0300 1212 999 during the hours of 9:15am and 4.00pm.

7. Do we need any training for the abseil?

No previous experience is needed to take part: it’s suitable for everyone over 16 years of age; however, parental consent is required for 16 & 17 year olds. Our team of highly skilled instructors will ensure you are safely equipped with everything you need to make your abseil safe and enjoyable.

8. What time do I abseil?

Soon after you register to take part in the abseil we will send you a welcome pack by email or post confirming your registration time . This is the time that you should arrive at our registration area (Pursers Ticket Office). A shuttle bus will take you and your supporters to the The Titan Crane, a very short journey away. You should abseil within 45 minutes of your registration time, although this can vary.

If in the week before the abseil you have not yet received your confirmed registration time, please call us on 0300 1212 999 during the hours of 9:15am and 4.00pm.

8a. What if I arrive late? Will I still be able to take part?

Please call ahead if you can to alert us you are going to be late - 0300 1212 999 - and we may be able to reschedule your abseil time, although we cannot guarantee it.

9. Abseiling as a team, can we have a team target?

Yes – this is something which many groups find helpful and makes it even more fun also. To work out your team target, simply add together all your individual targets. Remember to contact your Regional Fundraising Advisor for help and advice.

10. I've had a stroke, heart attack or have a medical condition – can I still abseil?

Although we will try our best to accommodate those with special requirements, the health and safety of our participants is our overriding concern and sometimes it is not possible for all participants to abseil. We reserve the right to make this decision at any point on a case by case basis, even if we initially thought it possible for an individual to abseil.

If you have a query, please call us on 0300 1212 999 during the hours of 9:15am and 4.00pm.

11. What shall I wear?

Wear clothes that you are comfortable in for the abseil, and good sturdy footwear. It can be cold at the point of abseil due to the height and proximity to the River Clyde. A waterproof jacket is handy even if it’s not wet as it can act as a wind breaker. Clothing with zipped pockets are also very handy if you plan to carry any small items to the abseil point, although we would recommend that you carry as little as possible even in zipped pockets.

In addition.... For your own comfort and safety those with long hair should plait their hair and use hair ties/grips to ensure it will not get tangled in the rope during the abseil.

12. Can I wear a fancy dress costume?

Yes please... Lots of Bright Day-Glo and Hi Vis outfits! We love people dressing up in fancy dress, however, safety comes first and you will not be allowed to abseil in any costume that could cause a health and safety risk to either yourself or others.

Unsuitable costumes are those that could get caught in the ropes etc. If you do come in fancy dress, please do bring a spare change of clothes, just in case we feel the costume isn’t suitable!

13. Can we carry a camera/phone up to the abseil point?

You can take small cameras and phones with you, however, everything you are carrying must be attached to your person at all times (e.g. with a wrist strap) and then be safely put into zipped pockets before you abseil.

14. Will there be photos?

Yes! We have professional photographers who will capture you as you make the descent. These photos are available to purchase after you land back on solid ground and cost £10 per print. 10% of the sale price goes to CHSS and by purchasing your photo you will also receive a digital version of the picture to post on Facebook etc!

15. What happens if it is rainy/windy/cold?

Inclement weather does not usually cause any problems and the event will run as usual in all but the most severe weather.

If there is the possibility of a cancellation/postponement, we would post details at: www.bigabseil.com – if you provided a mobile phone number during registration, we will also send a text message to you with further information.

If you have not raised or collected in all your sponsorship money before the day of the event – don’t worry!
