Reduce Your Risk Of Stroke

These pages provide practical help and information to help you reduce your risk of stroke.

The information about high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and lifestyle factors is also applicable to people with no previous history of stroke illness (primary prevention). Your age and general health also have to be taken into consideration.

Lifestyle changes: Control weight, eat healthily, keep active, moderate alcohol, stop smoking.

Having a stroke increases your risk of having another. However there is a lot that can be done to help such as taking medication to thin your blood, controlling high blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes and altering your lifestyle to reduce known risk factors (secondary prevention)

You will need the help of doctors and nurses to identify individual problems and make sure they are well controlled. More complex situations may need access to specialist services such as preventative surgery. Lifestyle changes can be done by you.
