Control Diabetes

Damage to blood vessels is the main complication of diabetes increasing the risk of strokes, heart disease and poor circulation.

Other complications of diabetes are

  • nephropathy—kidney disease
  • retinopathy—damage to the eyes
  • neuropathy—nerve damage

It is very important to reduce all your other risk factors for heart disease and stroke as well as control your diabetes.

Monitor Your Diabetes

    • check your blood glucose levels
    • test your urine
    • attend the doctor or clinic regularly
    • have an annual eye examination
    • attend a chiropodist regularly—people with diabetes are prone to healing problems with their feet

Other Ways To Help Yourself

  • have your blood pressure checked annually and treated if necessary—the recommended level of blood pressure is lower for people with diabetes (<140/90 mmHg)
  • have your cholesterol checked and treated if necessary
  • stop smoking
  • eat a healthy, balanced diet
  • aim for a healthy weight
  • moderate alcohol intake
  • take regular exercise
