Research fellowship — up to £90,000

CHSS funds research fellowships aimed at undertaking research programmes of clinical or basic scientific work related to chest, heart or stroke illness.

The award is worth a maximum of £90,000 for up to three years, and is open to doctors completing their general professional training at a Scottish hospital, preferably already with their MRCP.

The application should be made jointly by the applicant and supervisor.

Project awards — up to £90,000

CHSS funds research into the aetiology, diagnosis, prevention, treatment and / or social aspects of chest, heart and stroke illness. CHSS aims to focus on patient–based research which has the potential to lead to significant enhancement of patient care.

Projects will be funded up to a maximum of £90,000 for up to three years.

Minor research awards — up to £5,000

Funding is available for small-scale projects, including applications from nurses, AHPs and students. Projects should demonstrate the potential to improve patient care for people affected by chest, heart and stroke illness, and / or promote better health.

Pilot studies that have the potential for stimulating larger scale research work would be particularly welcome.

Minor awards are considered every two months.

Action research – up to £40,000

CHSS is also willing to consider approaches for support for other research initiatives, particularly from non–medical health professionals, which are directly related to potential for health improvement and patient care. Outline proposals (maximum two pages A4) will be considered at any time.

General information

CHSS is a member of the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC), and follows AMRC peer review procedures in allocating research funds. The Charity also directly commissions research into areas of particular interest, such as stroke medicine and rehabilitation.

All research applications are restricted to those living and working in Scotland. We do not fund research involving animals.
