We have landed on the moon!
Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland's community heart & chest support groups have achieved their aim of getting The Inverclyde Globetrotters to the moon!
Over the last four months they have walked, run, cycled and danced a total of over 240,000 miles. Their feat has had the backing of one of Britain's best known figures, astronomer Sir Patrick Moore, as well as several members of the Scottish Parliament.
One of the lunar trek's key figures is Duncan Galbraith, the Inverclyde Globetrotter's coach. He was literally over the moon with delight at the achievement reporting: 'The Earth looks great from 238,857 miles away. Mission Accomplished. Now we just need to get back!'
Duncan Galbraith (L) and Nicola Cotter gave an excellent presentation on the ethos and success of the Trek to members of the Cross Party Group on Heart Disease & Stroke at the Scottish Parliament on 25th January 2012. This photo shows most of the Lunar Trek's steering group comprising representatives from the Glasgow Caledonian University, CHSS chest & heart groups and staff.
Across Scotland, people have gone their own way to help get to the moon.
- In Highland one group 'walked' all the way from John o' Groats to Lands End.
- In Angus, they made it to France celebrating with French wine when they arrived.
- In the Borders area, another group 'visited' one of its members who is temporarily in Italy and received a postcard for their efforts.
People have also been inspired to continue with their exercise with one Stirling gent renewing his fondness for cycling and feeling that his health has improved as a result.
What is the Lunar Trek?
A 'virtual' trek to the Moon: a mere 238,857 miles! Our Lunar Trek leaflet has all the information you will need (see Related Docs). Sir Patrick Moore is our Patron.

The Inverclyde Globetrotters
The Inverclyde Globetrotters is one of our affiliated groups – with around 25 members. The group formed at the beginning of 2008 out of a weekly gym–based Phase IV cardiac rehabilitation class.
To make their exercise more fun, the group use pedometers to record all the steps they take each week: both at the class and as they go about their daily lives. Since 2008 they have 'virtually':
- 'Walked' Route 66 in the USA
- 'Visited' 37 European Cities
- 'Walked' around the world
Now they have set their sights on walking to the Moon. All the miles which they have walked, to date, will be 'banked': this means that a fair distance has already been covered (approx 50,000 miles!) but there is still a long way to go!
To get to the moon the Inverclyde Globetrotters need the help of other groups: we would like as many of our affiliated groups as possible to take part.
