Interventions
Sometimes your doctor will recommend that you need a surgical intervention to help control your symptoms of heart disease. Heart surgery can be planned in advance or performed as part of emergency treatment. It can help to:
- Correct / regulate an abnormal heart rhythm
- Restore blood supply to the heart by opening, or replacing, blocked coronary arteries
- Stretch, repair or replace a damaged heart valve
- Maintain and prolong life
Apart from emergency situations, it is important that you are prepared for surgery and know what it involves as well as what the risks are. If you have to wait for your surgery, try to use the time positively and prepare yourself e.g. by making any necessary changes to your lifestyle that will reduce your risk of future heart disease.
