Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN)
Aim
Improve the quality of health care for patients in Scotland by reducing variation in practice and outcome, through the development and dissemination of national clinical guidelines.
Public Role
Patient Network
Purpose
To ensure that guidelines address issues that matter to patients and carers.
Commitment
- group meetings every 2-3 months for 2 years
- review research papers and guidelines
- contribute to Information for patients sections
Requirements
- experience of condition relevant to guidelines
- familiarity with 'clinical language’
- good communication skills
- enthusiasm and commitment
Exceptions
People with unfinished/ painful issues regarding own condition may find the process distressing
Training
Initially offered buddy representative for support
Benefits
- be up to date with research in relevant condition
- use experiences to improve standards of care for other patients
