National Advisory Committee for Stroke (NACS)
Aim
To advise the Scottish Executive Health Department on all matters relating to stroke, including
- the level and quality of stroke services
- the range and total numbers of staff involved in providing stroke services
- distribution of stroke strategy funding and identifying priorities for future funding
- discussions of new and innovative treatments for stroke
Public Role
Member of the National Advisory Committee for Stroke (NACS)
Purpose
Provide a view from patient/ carers perspective on all matters relating to stroke
Commitment
Four attendances at NACS meetings per year (half a day), with approximately two hours reading prior to each meeting. Maintain networks with other patients and carers either through local managed clinical network (MCN), Patient & Carer Forum, Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland (CHSS) Stroke Support Group to provide feedback from NACS meetings.
There may also be opportunities to engage with local MCNs or join special meetings to discuss specific issues.
Requirements
- experience of stroke illness
- confidence to share views and opinions in public, challenging the views of clinicians and policy makers where necessary.

Training
- as required on an individual basis
- possibility of ‘buddy’ representative for support

Reimbursement
Travel, meals, accommodation, child care and reasonable administrative expenses. Costs for a carer to accompany a patient representative may also be available.
