Physical Activity and Exercise in the Management of Cardiovascular Disease

  • Part I: Principles and Practicalities – Saturday 26th Jan and Sunday 27th Jan 2013
  • Part II Advanced Applications – Saturday 27th April and Sunday 28th April 2013
  • Venue: Health at Heart Centre, Royal Alexandra Hospital, Corsebar Road, Paisley PA2 9PN

The Part I course provides a 2-day foundation programme in the principles of physical activity and exercise in the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease. This course includes both a theoretical and practical component aiming to equip health professionals with sound knowledge and understanding as well as key practical delivery skills required to meet the core standards and national guidelines for delivery of group, one-to-one and home activity programmes. This course is for any health professional advising on or delivering physical activity and exercise to cardiac patients in either a primary or secondary health care setting.

The Part 2 course extends the core knowledge, understanding and skills gained in Part 1 to clinical reasoning for the inclusion of the higher risk and complex cardiac patient, such as heart failure, arrhythmias, ICDs, unstable blood pressure and diabetes. In addition additional subjects explored include the safety of high intensity sports and activities, resistance training, water-based activity and difficult clinical scenarios.

Prepares students to intervene and manage long–term cardiac disease using a holistic approach, reflecting on the patient journey and appraising their own role in the delivery of evidence based interventions. Hosted by the University of Glasgow.

Managing Cardiovascular Risk – 20 Credits At Masters Level

Prepares students to assess and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, working within an inter–disciplinary team, providing effective communication and evidence based practice to deliver effective cardiac care. Hosted by the University of Glasgow.

Non Malignant Palliative Care: A Distance Learning Partnership with Strathcarron Hospice and the University of West of Scotland

Principles of Acute Cardiac Management – 20 Credits At Masters Level

This course encourages students to reflect on how acute cardiac care is integrated into processes of service delivery to both sustain life and maintain dignity. By integrating the evidence from research into clinical practice students are encouraged to benchmark practice to the holistic needs of the acutely ill cardiac patient and their family. Assessing And Managing Symptoms—20 Credits At Masters Level

Specialist Heart Failure and Heart Failure Palliative Care Modules (Masters Level)

  • Supportive Palliative Care for Patients with Advancing Heart Failure (15 credits) adopts a traditional face to face learning approach and will be delivered from Glasgow Caledonian University from Monday 10th to Friday 14th September 2012. The cost of this module is £445.
  • Chronic Heart Failure: Optimising Health & Wellbeing (30 credits) adopts a blended learning approach to delivery and will commence on Monday 21st to Friday 25th January 2013. The cost of this module is £890.
  • Advanced Communication Skills (15 credits) adopts a traditional face to face learning approach and will be delivered from Glasgow Caledonian University over one full week. Dates for this module are still to be confirmed for 2013.The cost of this module is £445.
