Aims and objectives of course
The aim of the course is to enhance the skills and knowledge of health and social care staff working with people affected by stroke.
By the end of this course participants will:
- Have increased their knowledge and skills related to stroke
- Be able to select and apply this to their own work practice
- Have refined the learning into specific objectives
- Have identified areas where further learning needs to be developed
- Have examined their own work practice
The content of Current Care in Stroke Part 1 covers the 20 Stroke Core Competencies (NES 2005).
Target audience
All health and social care staff working for NHS Lothian or NHS Borders who have limited or no experience in working with stroke.

Day 1
- What is a stroke?
- Experiencing the effects of stroke workshop
- Communication disorders and stroke
- Swallowing issues after stroke
- Nutrition following stroke
Day 2
- Activities of daily living and how to help
- Psychological issues in stroke care
- Knowledge and skills workshop
- Physical issues related to stroke (theory and practice)
Day 3
- Continence management post stroke
- Nursing care and management related to stroke
- Skin care post stroke
- Organisation of stroke services
- Stroke – a patient's perspective
