Stroke Training NHS Lothian and Borders
How Stroke Training Developed in Lothian and Borders:
In 2000, Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland (CHSS) in partnership with NHS Lothian identified the need for specialised training for nurses and other health professionals working with stroke patients and their families.
With the appointment of a Stroke Training Co-ordinator, NHS Lothian has successfully been providing education and training courses and study days throughout the region. The partnership was extended to incorporate NHS Borders in 2006.
All courses are open to health professionals and social service staff within Lothian and Borders.
The courses have been designed at Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced levels. The Introductory and Intermediate courses both take the form of two consecutive days plus a follow-up day one month later and have a maximum of 16 participants.
The Advanced course takes the form of one day only and focuses on a specific topic on stroke. Further courses are available for social services and community care staff.
Each course and study day stands alone, the content having been carefully chosen to address the knowledge and skills required at that particular level. On completion a personal action plan is drawn up to identify further specific learning needs, which are discussed with the line manager.
The courses and study days aim to be:
- relevant to the workplace
- reflective of practice
- empowering and enabling
- challenging, but supportive and non-judgmental
- confidence building.
Specifically designed study days can be set up in order to address the learning needs of particular staff groups.
