Lanarkshire Stroke Training
In 2008 Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland (CHSS), in partnership with NHS Lanarkshire and NHS Education Scotland, identified the need for specialist training for nurses and other health professionals working with stroke patients and their families.
With the appointment of a Stroke Practice Development Facilitator, NHS Lanarkshire aims to provide education and training for staff throughout the region.
The courses have been designed as:
- Stroke Core Competency Course: this takes the form of 2 consecutive days with a follow–up afternoon session 1 month later.
- Generic Stroke Study Days: this takes the form of 1 day only and includes relevant topics for staff with a mixed caseload.
- Specialising Study Days: this takes the form of 1 day and focuses on specific topics in stroke in more detail.
- STAT (Stroke & TIA Assessment Training): this takes the form of 1 day and focuses on the recognition, assessment and treatment of acute stroke and TIA.
Each course and study day stands alone, the content having been carefully chosen to address the knowledge and skills required at that particular level.
The courses and study days aim to:
- Be relevant to the workplace
- Reflect practice
- Empower and enable
- Challenge, but support and be non judgemental
- Build confidence
Specifically designed study days can be set up in order to address the learning needs of particular staff groups.
Team of trainers
The Stroke Practice Development Facilitator with a team of trainers, all from the Stroke Team, deliver the different aspects of the courses.
