NHS Lanarkshire

NHS Education in Scotland

In 2008 Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland (CHSS), in partnership with NHS Lanarkshire and NHS Education Scotland, identified the need for specialist training for nurses and other health professionals working with stroke patients and their families.

With the appointment of a Stroke Practice Development Facilitator, NHS Lanarkshire aims to provide education and training for staff throughout the region

A 2 day course has been designed to provide the knowledge required to meet the NHS Education Scotland Stroke Core Competencies for Healthcare Staff. Advanced Study Days will be planned to meet more specific needs of staff beyond the knowledge required for the Stroke Core Competencies.

  • The Stroke Core Competency Course covers a variety of topics essential to the care of the stroke patient and their family. This course takes the form of 2 consecutive study days and will have a maximum of 20 participants.
  • The Advanced day takes the form of 1 day only and focuses on a specific topic.

The 2 day Stroke Core Competency Course provides a unique opportunity for line managers to facilitate staff to further develop their competency in stroke care.

On completion of the Stroke Core Competency Course, participants will receive support from an identified mentor and / or the Stroke Practice Development Facilitator to identify further learning needs, and facilitate the transfer of knowledge into practice in the workplace.

The course and study days aim to

  • be relevant to the workplace
  • reflect practice
  • empower and enable
  • challenge, but support and be non-judgemental
  • build confidence

Specifically designed study days can be set up in order to address the learning needs of particular staff groups.
