Current Care in Stroke (Part 1)

Aims and objectives

The aim of the course is to enhance the skills and knowledge of health and social care staff working with people affected by stroke.

By the end of this course participants will:

  • Have increased their knowledge and skills related to stroke
  • Be able to select and apply this to their own work practice
  • Have refined the learning into specific objectives
  • Have identified areas where further learning needs to be developed
  • Have examined their own work practice

The content of Current Care in Stroke Part 1 covers the 20 Stroke Core Competencies (NES 2005).

Target Audience

All health and social care staff in Grampian who have limited or no experience in working with stroke.

Course Outline

Day 1

  • What is a stroke?
  • Experiencing effects of a stroke workshop
  • Activities of daily living and how to help
  • Communication and stroke
  • Organisation of stroke services

Day 2

  • Nutrition and stroke
  • Swallowing and stroke
  • Neuropsychology service for stroke
  • Physical ability after stroke (theory and practical)

Follow–up day

  • Nurses role and management
  • Skin care after stroke
  • Continence promotion and management
  • Impact of stroke – a patient's perspective
  • Oral hygiene after stroke
  • Feedback from follow–up task
