Aims and objectives

The aim of the course is to enhance the skills and knowledge of health and social care staff working with people affected by stroke.

By the end of this course participants will

  • Have increased their knowledge and skills related to stroke
  • Be able to select and apply this to their own work practice
  • Have refined the learning into specific objectives
  • Have identified areas where further learning needs to be developed
  • Have examined their own work practice

The content of Current Care in Stroke Part 1 covers the 20 Stroke Core Competencies (NES 2005).

Course outline

Day 1

  • What is a stroke?
  • Knowledge and skills workshop
  • Organisation of stroke services
  • Swallowing and nutrition after stroke
  • Communication and stroke

Day 2

  • Activities of daily living and stroke
  • Skin care after stroke
  • Experiencing stroke workshop
  • Physical ability after stroke (theory and practical)

Follow–up day

  • Psychological aspects in stroke care
  • Nursing role and management
  • Continence and stroke
  • Spiritual care in stroke
  • Team working and interpersonal skills

Target audience

All health and social care staff in Fife who work with stroke patients and their carers.
