How stroke training developed in fife

In 2002 Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland (CHSS) in partnership with NHS Fife identified the need for specialised training for nurses and other health professionals working with stroke patients and their families.

With the appointment of a Stroke Training Coordinator, NHS Fife has successfully been providing education and training courses and study days throughout the region.

The courses have been designed as:

  • Current Care in Stroke Part 1 takes the form of 2 consecutive days (maximum 16 participants).
  • Current Care in Stroke Part 2 takes the form of 2 consecutive days (maximum 16 participants).
  • Single Stroke Study Days which take the form of 1 day only and focus on a specific topic in stroke.
  • Social Services Study Days which take the form of 1 day only and focus on relevant topics.
  • Specifically Designed Study Days can be organised to address the learning needs of particular staff groups. For more information regarding the rationale related to the provision of these study days please contact the Stroke Training Coordinator.

For Current courses and dates see Related Documents.

Each course and study day stands alone, the content having been carefully chosen to address the knowledge and skills required at that particular level. On completion a personal action plan is drawn up to identify further specific learning needs, which are discussed with the line manager.

The courses and study days aim to:

  • Be relevant to the workplace
  • Reflect practice
  • Empower and enable
  • Challenge, but support and be non judgemental
  • Build confidence

Specifically designed study days can be set up in order to address the learning needs of particular staff groups.

Resources for carers

Carer information sessions are being delivered across Fife in partnership with the Fife Stroke Training Coordinator and Fife Carers Centre.

'You care, they care, we care – a practical guide from NHS Fife' is an innovative new DVD resource which will be available in Fife in 2012 for informal carers of patients following stroke.

This DVD has been produced and developed jointly by Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland’s (CHSS) Stroke Training Coordinator (Fife), NHS Fifes Stroke Coordinator & Stroke Specialist Nurse along with members of the Fife Stroke Managed Clinical Network and the STARs 4 Project Manager for CHSS.Funding for this resource was provided by The Stroke Innovation Awards within CHSS.

ScoT (Stroke Competency Toolkit)

New for 2012 the ScoT (Stroke Competency Toolkit) will enable staff to transfer knowledge into practice and provide a portfolio of evidence to support their development.

It is based on the stroke core competencies developed by NHS Education for Scotland (2005) and is aligned to the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework (KSF).

The Stroke Training Coordinator will oversee the roll out of the SCoT into Stroke Units within NHS Fife in 2012 ensuring that the toolkit will be available for all members and levels of the stroke multidisciplinary team.
