Aims and objectives

The aim of the course is to enhance the skills and knowledge of health and social care staff working with people affected by stroke.

By the end of this course participants will:

  • Have increased their knowledge and skills related to stroke
  • Be able to select and apply this to their own work practice
  • Have refined the learning into specific objectives
  • Have identified areas where further learning needs to be developed
  • Have examined their own work practice

The content of Current Care in Stroke Part 1 covers the 20 Stroke Core Competencies (NES 2005).

Target audience

All health and social care staff in Dumfries & Galloway who work with stroke patients and their carers.

Day 2

  • Follow–up day task

  • Activities of daily living and how to help
  • Physical ability after stroke (theory and practical)

Follow–up day

  • Rehabilitation and prognosis for recovery
  • Continence promotion and management after stroke
  • Skin care after stroke
  • Nursing care and management
  • Experiencing the effects of a stroke
  • Feedback from day 2 task
