Dumfries And Galloway Stroke Training
Stroke Training Coordinator
Elaine Grubb
In 2003 Chest Heart & Stroke (CHSS) in partnership with NHS Dumfries & Galloway identified the need for specialised training for nurses and other health professionals working with stroke patients and their families. With the appointment of a Stroke Training Coordinator, NHS Dumfries & Galloway has successfully been providing education and training courses and study days throughout the region. Training in Stroke Care is offered in both Dumfries and Newton Stewart to allow for accesibility across the region.
The Stroke Training Coordinator in Dumfries & Galloway also has a dual role as the Stroke Specialist Nurse in Wigtownshire. Due to this, the number of courses and study days offered in the region are fewer than in other health boards and early booking is advised.
The courses have been designed as:
- Current Care in Stroke Part 1 which is delivered over 2 consecutive days (maximum of 16 participants).
- Current Care in Stroke Part 2 which is delivered over 2 consecutive days (maximum of 16 participants).
- The Single Stroke Study Days focus on specific relevant topics.
- Care Home & Care Agency Study Days include relevant topics that are current and evidence based.
For Current courses and dates see Related Documents.
Each course and study day stands alone, the content having been carefully chosen to address the knowledge and skills required at that particular level. On completion a personal action plan is drawn up to identify further specific learning needs, which are discussed with the line manager.
The courses and study days aim to:
- Be relevant to the workplace
- Reflect practice
- Empower and enable
- Challenge, but support and be non judgemental
- Build confidence
Specifically designed study days can be set up in order to address the learning needs of particular staff groups.
