North East - Grampian and Tayside
The North West region is divided into 4 areas comprising of
- Moray: Elgin and surrounding area
- Grampian: Aberdeen North and Aberdeen South
- Aberdeenshire: Banchory and Stonehaven
- Tayside: Scone, Blairgowrie, Alyth, Dundee, Montrose and Forfar
Services are currently provided in a group setting with a focus on activities which promote and support all forms of communication. The groups are coordinated by a trained member of Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland staff who coordinate and manage a team of role specific trained volunteers.
Staff and volunteers are trained by the department’s communication training team which is managed by the charity’s speech and language therapist.
The activities taking place in the groups are selected and negotiated by the service users to ensure that they are of interest and are appropriate. The topics are presented in a format which is accessible to all our service users depending on the degree of communication support needs they may require.
The choice of activities is extremely varied and provides the opportunity to perhaps discover a new skill or interest for the member.
Specialised VSS Services
Core Communication Groups
These groups are structured to support service users who may find it difficult to participate in the larger more established services. The core communication groups are of a smaller size usually only 6 service users or less plus the coordinator and supporting volunteers. They operate for a specific number of weeks or months.
Members of the core communication services negotiate and select the activities and topics to ensure inclusion and that they are appropriate and of interest.
These groups provide a more structured approach using more tools and techniques to support and promote the communication strategy being worked on by the service user. Our link NHS speech and language therapists act as the main referrer to these groups and work closely with the coordinator to support their patient in achieving any specific goals they may wish to set for themselves.
Other referrers are Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland Stroke Nurses, other health professionals and self referral.
Core Communication groups are currently in operation in Moray where they are delivered in different locations depending on where the need arises.
Dundee services are currently under redevelopment and core communication groups will be set up to meet the needs of the referrals in a location which is central to where they are.
Core Communication groups will be developed through out the region as and when the need dictates.
Outreach Services
This type of service delivery is developed when a service user requires one to one support which is out with the group setting. This can be to either support a person into the core communication or long term services or have a goal specific purpose. This type of service delivery is on demand and is a time limited support for the service user.
Self Help Groups (Community Support Network)
These stroke clubs are affiliated to Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland and are organised completely on a voluntary basis. The clubs have a social focus and are self funding. The CSN clubs can, where appropriate be the next stepping stone for VSS service users as they become more independent and ready to move on to a more social setting.
