CHSS 2011 Manifesto

Working together for a healthier future

  • 235,000 Scots have coronary heart disease
  • 107,000 Scots live with the effects of stroke
  • 101,000 are affected by chronic chest illness
  • Scotland is no longer the heart disease capital of the western world, but far too many Scots still develop chest, heart and stroke illness
  • Together, chest, heart and stroke diseases still account for half of all deaths in Scotland

Progress has been made – but more needs to be done

The CHSS Manifesto recommends a set of actions that will support Scotland to deliver world–class healthcare, and enhance our excellent reputation for research and innovation in health.

Priorities over the next Parliament: a call to action

  • Protect Health Service investment
  • Ensure that the resources are there to fund innovation
  • Maintain funding for post–discharge support services
  • Support the role of voluntary organisations and individual volunteers in the long–term support of patients
  • Support people back to work
  • Maintain the Keep Well and Well North programmes, and extend their remits to cover prevention of COPD
  • Give patients a voice!
  • Extend Scotland's successful tobacco control measures
  • Encourage Local Authorities to improve the provision of both health education and physical activity in schools
  • Support medical research
